WATTECO PROVIDES MULTIPHY NETWORKING SOLUTIONS USING 6LOWPAN FOR YOUR SMART GRIDS APPLICATIONS!
>Smart embedded systems networking : which standard?
In the context of energy savings, Smart Grid achievement is increasing the number of connecting systems with the Grid, which also include a wide variety of sensors deployed within Residential and Building areas. This deployment creates a real Smart Energy infrastructure where appliances and smart sensors create a network to exchange data with reliability and high level of interoperability with other systems.
This is similar situation to the Internet at its birth when manufacturers brought their own protocol (such as IPX or SNA) and interconnecting systems involving complex multi-protocol networks. To avoid proprietary protocols and to benefit from common networking services, Internet Protocol (IP) drove computers connectivity to a scalable communication protocol. By the same token, adopting an IP-based architecture should enable smart embedded systems manufacturers to benefit of all advantages of an opened standard widely used by major systems over the world.
>Moving towards IP standard : why IPv6?
IPv6 protocol has been designed to be the successor of IPv4 with the intent to enable a large scale deployment thanks to its extended address space (2128 addresses instead of 232 for IPv4). The mass deployment of smart devices and sensors for energy-saving applications requires a new way of looking at network communications over LLNs (Low Power and Lossy Networks). Limited memory and communication capabilities constrain the routing state at each node as well as the routing information that might be communicated. These restrictions make it impossible to use protocols that rely on complete link-state information.
By this way, IPv6 standard and, specially 6LoWPAN, improves memory and bandwidth efficiency with new features such as : MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) increase, packets fragmentation at the endpoints, auto-configuration capabilities with SAA (Stateless Address Auto-configuration), IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low power and Lossy Networks (RPL)... 6LoWPAN opens the way of a common smart energy platform that can operate over a variety of different link layers including, but not limited to, low-power wireless or PLC technologies. This multiPHY networking makes IPv6 as the ideal protocol for large scale deployments of embedded devices, sensors and other smart objects.
